As many of you know, one of our core messages here at the Family Rocketship is that to make a difference in the world, you first need to make a difference in your own home. And that starts with an awesome relationship between you and your spouse.
But it takes a lot to make a relationship work. Luckily, there are people out there like our new friend Dr. Jennifer Gill Rosier (a.k.a. Jennie) that can offer us wisdom to guide us on the way.
Jennie has written an awesome book called Make Love, Not Scrapbooks and 9 other research-based love tips to intensify your relationship . It’s crammed full of great tips and insights about making the most of any relationship.
The premise of the book is simple: 10 love tips that dive deeply into making your relationship with your significant other rock. Jennie’s own words, “the aim of the book is to get my readers thinking about spending more time with their partners and less time doing all of those trivial things in life that we love so much; like scrapbooking”.
One of the things I love about this book is that not only is it jam packed with well-researched information, it’s full of personal stories to make it all real. In other words, it’s obvious Jennie has spent a lot of time in academia but she’s also included the more important real life experience to back up her teachings.
Another aspect of her book that I love is the mini tips section in each chapter. She throws in goodies like “4 Positivity Activities”, “5 Tips for Being Funny”, “16 Ways to Boost Your Sexual Desire”, and an entire list of date ideas for each season.
One of the chapters that resonated most with me was the one entitled simply, “Laugh”. I’ve mentioned before that Heidi says she fell in love with me because we spent our first dates just laughing. Laughing is so important to a healthy relationship!
Jennie starts the chapter by sharing about how her parents were soul mates and had a great marriage. She says the secret to their marriage was taking the time to laugh. In her words, “I’ve learned that life is too short for it to be serious all of the time, that you can never tell someone that you love them too much, and that you should always take time out of everyday to laugh with the people you love”.
Very wise counsel.
Another aspect I love about the book are the resources at the end which include blogs for couples to follow. Among those blogs include Simple Marriage where yours truly guest posts.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone in a relationship, looking for a relationship, or looking to make their relationship better. When all is said and done, the relationship you have with your spouse will be the most important legacy of your entire life. Tools like Jennie’s book can help us achieve that worthy goal.
